Aava Uusikuu - Water is Burning - Music to the poems of Mirkka Rekola

Aava Uusikuu

Aava Uusikuu (b. 1974) is a Finnish singer-songwriter and voice improvisation artist.

Her musical roots are in the singer-songwriter tradition of 60's and 70's. There are also influences from folk, Finnish schlager, world music, jazz, classical music and minimalism in her music. She has been influenced by artists such as Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Björk, Lisa Gerrard and Lhasa de Sela.

In spite of her musical education Aava's approach to writing songs is intuitive and emotional. Making music for her is "to live through the mystery of life". The sensitive way of listening to sounds and emotions is important in the process of making music.

About the album

"The soundscape of this album has been created with a broad arsenal of instruments. In addition to Uusikuu's singing and piano, there are also kantele (Finnish zither), accordion, string quartet, choir, clarinet, double bass, drums and percussions. Even thou the selection of instruments is wide, Uusikuu applies the elements in an unaffected and elegant way."
– Markku Makkonen, critic (newspaper Tamperelainen)

"The singer's flexible, intensive and magically intimate voice expresses the lines in a fine way, articulation is particularly clear. There is a certain kind of repetition in the naturally moving arrangements that are rich in nuances, but it only seems to highlight the transparent brilliance of the poems."
– Matti Saurama (critic, Uutispäivä Demari)

"Aava knows the ways of stillness. She puts the soul to the music and makes the work sound like itself: the remarkable poetry that has been treated in a respective manner."
– Markku Makkonen, critic (newspaper Tamperelainen)
